South Side Ald. JoAnn Thompson, known for her efforts to bring a Whole Foods and an annual music festival to Englewood, died Monday night of heart failure about two weeks after an operation, her chief of staff said Tuesday.
Thompson, 16th, was locked in a re-election fight against fellow Ald. Toni Foulkes and three other candidates. Foulkes decided to take on her colleague after a City Council remap gave the edge to a Latino candidate in her current 15th Ward.
“It is with heavy hearts that we confirm Ald. JoAnn Thompson passed away yesterday, surrounded by her family, friends and lots of love from the greater Englewood community, which she served with devotion to her final day,” said chief of staff Debbie Blair. “JoAnn suffered a sudden heart failure, finally succumbing to a health battle that she fought with the same courage and grace for which she was known and loved throughout her wonderful life.”
